Audubon Ballroom Restoration |
The Audubon Ballroom project in Manhattan, the NYC Economic Development Corporation's monument to Malcolm X is an intricate preservation project. Engaged as a general contractor, the Velez Organization is responsible for constructing this $2.5 million restoration/renovation. The building, historic for its beauty and infamy (Malcolm X was murdered there) was almost completely torn down. However, preservationists prevailed and two facade walls were saved from demolition.
The remaining walls, constructed of white terra cotta with polychromatic friezes, topped with a stamped metal cornice had suffered from years of neglect. Soot and graffiti were painstakingly removed from the terra cotta while the cornice had layers of paint chemically dissolved and washed off. As expected, much of the terra cotta was damaged beyond repair. Over 100 new pieces of glazed terra cotta had to be made, including a 300 pound bust of Neptune with a mermaid emerging from the sea. Interior restoration included a new terrazzo floor, lobby columns, arches and terra cotta angels.
Other rehabilitation work involved new office space, bathrooms, and preparatory work for a new community Healthcare facility.
