MISSION AND HISTORY

The Velez Organization (Velez) literally started with a big break when Andrew Velez, a union carpenter, fell two stories and broke his ankle. Unable to work, he returned to school and started a small contracting firm in his Brooklyn apartment as a Federal Government 8A contractor in 1972.

As the business began to grow, his daughter Elizabeth, now President of the Velez Organization, would visit his construction sites in order to spend time with him and developed an interest in the industry.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

Though Velez’s core competencies have greatly expanded outside of general contracting over the past few decades, the firm remains an active and highly sought out general contractor. Current customers recognize the value that years of experiences and expanded technical expertise that Velez brings to general contracting work.

DIVERSITY AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS

Velez credits the growth of the firm to a commitment to diversity and the creation of opportunities to further support that growth. As a byproduct of staunch support for minority businesses, the firm has gone over and above the requirements to create creative diversity solutions embodied in the true spirit of building strong emerging businesses.

Velez believes in meeting or exceeding contract requirements for Minority/Woman-Owned Business Enterprises (M/WBEs) participation. For nearly 50 years, Velez has been a certified Minority Business Enterprise with New York State, as well as numerous other certifications with agencies such as New York City, Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.

Velez has a strong commitment to including M/WBEs in all of its work. Elizabeth Velez acts as the firm’s community liaison and administrator of its minority/small business participation program. She has also co-chaired a seminar on women entrepreneurship for the NYS Assembly and is a board member of the Association of Minority Businesses of New York and the Latino Builders Council.  Moreover, she sits on the Diversity Advisory Board for the New York State Department of Transportation, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the New York City School Construction Authority and the New York City Department of Small Business Services.
