The Velez Organization provided construction management, quality assurance, and diversity compliance services for the Department of Design and Construction’s (DDC) Borough-Based Jails Program, constructing new borough-based jails throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx to comply with the City’s plan to close Rikers Island.
The new network of jails can house approximately 5,000 individuals and grants the City an opportunity to build a more humane justice system. These new facilities prioritize dignity, better connections to and space for families, attorneys, courts, medical and mental health care, education, therapeutic programming and service providers.
