Build it Back Program

Location: New York, NY (Queens)

Delivery Method: Construction Management

Velez Organization provided construction management services alongside Tishman Construction for the Mayor’s Housing Recovery Office (HRO) Build It Back Sandy housing recovery program in Queens. Managed by the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC), the program delivered CDBG-DR funding to Sandy-impacted homeowners for permanent repairs and resilient measures, including home elevations and full reconstruction.

Operating from an integrated team office in Howard Beach with HRO, DDC, Tishman, and Velez staff, the team was assigned more than 400 Sandy-damaged homes for rehabilitation, elevation, and reconstruction. The Build It Back Program carried comprehensive goals around MWBE inclusion and local workforce hiring.

Velez advanced these goals by working with program agencies to increase MWBE participation on NYCDDC’s Prequalified Bidders List, participating in local outreach events to expand utilization, identifying prime contract opportunities for MWBE firms across design, construction management, and construction, and leading local workforce hiring from Hurricane Sandy-affected zip codes in partnership with NYC agency programs like Workforce1.
